Innov’ATM attended the symposium organised by EUROCONTROL on the 17th and 18th of October on the RECAT-EU and Time Based Separation schemes.

RECAT-EU is the re-categorisation of aircraft in order to provide more precise wake turbulence separation rules on departing and arriving traffic, enabling optimisation of runways. The scheme has been developed by The European Organisation for the Safety of Air Navigation (EUROCONTROL) and its stakeholders in order to safely increase the capacity of airports.

It is a scheme that has been tested and proven to increase throughput. During the symposium, different airports and ANSPs were able to share their experiences on the integration of RECAT-EU rules in context, and give insight into how they managed to implement it and the benefits they reaped.

TBS (Time Based Separation), a concept also developed by EUROCONTROL and its stakeholders is especially useful where strong headwinds is a common issue. The aim is to allow as many aircraft to land in strong headwind conditions as in low headwind by applying the same time based separation rather than radar distance separation, and taking onto account the reduced wake turbulence strength and impact in strong headwind conditions.

RECAT-EU and TBS are two concepts that we integrate into our AMAN (Arrival Manager) and DMAN (Departure Manager) in order to optimise our sequencer and maximise runway throughput. Contact us for more information on our most efficient solution, SkyKeeper Coupled AMAN-DMAN.

Skyguide selects Innov’ATM and their Coupled AMAN DMAN solution to be validated for Geneva Airport in the frame of SESAR 2020 project PJ02 EARTH

Skyguide has selected Innov’ATM’s SkyKeeper Suite® to validate the concept of runway optimisation on single and multiple runway airports based on a coupled AMAN/DMAN which will be tested in the frame of SESAR 2020 project PJ02 EARTH (solution 08).

SESAR 2020 project “PJ02 EARTH” proposes several solutions for future RWY throughput optimisation. Skyguide is mandated to define the operational concept (OSED), the Safety Performance Requirements (SPR) and the Interoperability Requirements (INTEROP) for the solution 08. Solution 08 focuses on RWY optimisation on single and multiple RWY airports using a coupled AMAN/DMAN. Skyguide is also responsible for the validation of this concept in an environment of mixed mode operations single RWY (Geneva Airport) by means of real time simulations.

Skyguide and its subsidiary SkySoft-ATM participate in this multinational project led by Eurocontrol providing the operational and technical expertise and the simulation platform respectively.
In order to achieve this project, Innov’ATM will provide the SkyKeeper Suite® software to be integrated to the skyguide/SkySoft-ATM simulation platform.

This 18-month project will enable Innov’ATM to deploy its integrated software solution, SkyKeeper Suite® which implements the coupled AMAN/DMAN concept, to optimise air traffic management within the context of the skyguide/SkySoft-ATM simulation platform, providing significant operational improvements by optimising management of arrivals and departures, and increasing the capacity of the airport efficiently.

Montserrat Mendoza, responsible of skyguide activities in the project, said: “Single RWY in mixed mode is recognized to be the most constrained environment for the coupled AMAN/DMAN. Therefore, the validation of this concept in the operational environment of Geneva (high density and complexity) is a very challenging task that we will face with enthusiasm. We are looking forward to the collaboration with Innov’ATM to deal with this complex topic”.

The Single European Sky ATM Research (SESAR) project, set up in 2004 as the technological pillar of the Single European Sky to modernise Europe’s air traffic management (ATM) system, is now making significant progress in transforming the performance of Europe’s ATM network.
